In 2003 I went on a trip to West Africa, visiting Mali, Burkina Faso and Ghana. This was a real mind-expanding experience. I was enthralled with the African people, their art, culture, dress, music and their spirit.
I took off for a longer trip by myself, returning to Mali and Ghana and also visiting Niger, Burkina Faso and Senegal, where I learned more about the arts and crafts of these countries.
During the drought in Niger in 2004, I began selling the artefacts I had to raise money to help. In 2009/10 there have been more droughts, and severe floods in Niger and Mali which have destroyed homes and food stocks - people, children and animals are dying of starvation.
Selling these fairly-traded artefacts online means regular funds can be reinvested into these regions, which in turn helps some people to earn a steady income.
If you have never been to Africa, one day maybe you will take a trip yourself. For now, enjoy your journey through this website.
